As a follow up to our previous post on products for pregnancy, we are excited to share with you our favorite postpartum products! While there tends to be a lot of focus in our society on pregnancy and birth, we highly recommend taking some time to think through how you can get the care and support you need during your postpartum period, as well. Please make a plan for support, so you can focus on rest and recovery. Below you'll find a list we've complied of 12 of our current favorite postpartum products. (Click the pictures to be taken to the product link)
1. HERBAL SITZ BATH
We love MotherDoula's herbal sitz bath for the early postpartum days - and beyond. After brewing a blend of organic, sustainably sourced herbs, you can then rest and rejuvenate in a bath for at least 20 minutes. A postpartum herbal sitz bath will go along way to help heal the perineum and ease inflammation and soreness following delivery. We also recommend using your herbal blend in a peri bottle when going to the bathroom! Double whammy :)
2. MILKIES MILK SAVER
The Milkies Milk Saver is a soft plastic "cup" that you can place against the non-feeding breast while you are breastfeeding your baby. It is easily held in place by a nursing tank or bra, allowing you to be hands free as you feed your baby. The let down reflex is bilateral, meaning that both breasts can simultaneously release milk as Baby is feeding. For a lot of women, this means that they are leaking through nursing pads, bras, shirts, etc -- and always feeling WET! :) Milk Saver to the rescue! This little device collects the leaking milk and allows you to save those precious ounces, instead of wasting it to nursing pads and creating more laundry. Win, win!
3. NURSING TEA
So often new moms are worried or anxious about their milk production and this yummy tea is a great way to help! With fennel, anise, coriander, and fenugreek, this tea is a blend of herbs that have been traditionally used to support and increase a new mom's milk supply and promote healthy lactation. It's totally safe for your baby and counts toward your daily water intake!
4. YOUNG LIVING'S CLARADERM SPRAY
We love this spray, which helps to soothe sore, itchy, healing skin. It was formulated to bring comfort to the perineum following delivery and is safe to use over stitches, as well. ClaraDerm is a gentle blend of lavender, frankincense, myrrh and other essential oils to help relieve skin irritation, hemorrhoid discomfort, and promote healing. It can also help control Candida and it just smells so nice!
5. NIPPLE CARE
While breastfeeding shouldn't be painful if the baby's latch is correct, we recommend having some nipple cream on hand for those early days while you and baby are both figuring things out. We love Earth Mama Angel Baby's Nipple Butter because it is verified non-GMO, organic, and totally safe your baby - so you don't have to wash it off before feedings. Another tip: apply it to the flanges of your pump for a more comfortable pumping session. Soothies Gel Pads are hydrogel pads that help to heal and soothe your sore nipples as they adjust to breastfeeding. The reusable pads stick to your breasts in between your feeding sessions and provide you with instant, cooling relief so that any pain doesn't have to be a deterrent to an ongoing breastfeeding relationship.
6. PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION
Your placenta is an amazing organ that supported your baby before birth. It has done an amazing job of nourishing and supporting your growing baby in the womb, and it can continue to be beneficial after Baby is born, as well. Placenta encapsulation can help support lactation and increase milk supply, balance and regulate hormones while decreasing the likelihood of postpartum mood disorders, increase maternal energy levels, and facilitate an easier postpartum recovery. Kersti is a placenta specialist and is happy to answer any questions about the process or benefits.
7. BREASTFEEDING STATION
While not exactly a product, we love the idea of setting up a breastfeeding station before or after Baby is born! Find a basket (so that it's portable, depending on where you are feeding) and gather up some supplies that you are likely to need. Your partner can help you by making sure it stays stocked. Make sure to include a big bottle of water, easy to eat snacks, nipple cream, breast pads, Soothies, burp cloths, your phone/charger/kindle.
8. WONDER WEEKS APP
Wonder Weeks is an excellent, detailed book, but we especially like their easy to use app. Babies go through developmental "leaps" around the same time, often resulting in fussy stages, poor sleep, or overall demeanor change. It can be frustrating not knowing what is going on or why Baby is being "unexplainably" fussy. Armed with the knowledge of what is happening developmentally, new parents are able to anticipate and work through these times with confidence! The first leap occurs around at around 4 weeks.
9. NATURAL CALM
Natural Calm helps to promote healthy magnesium levels, while balancing calcium intake simultaneously. While the majority of us are not getting adequate magnesium (which shows up in all sorts of ways), our favorite benefit of Natural Calm in the postpartum period is for bowel support. Keeping things lose and soft as your perineum is healing can make a world of difference ;)
